Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Persons with disabilities (PWDs) face significant barriers in accessing education, employment, health services, and public life. In Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, efforts to enhance accessibility for PWDs have been hampered by infrastructure limitations and social stigma. However, digital media has emerged as an important tool in promoting accessibility, offering a platform for PWDs to connect with services, access educational content, and engage with advocacy groups. Platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and specialized websites can offer information, networking opportunities, and support services for PWDs. According to Ahmed et al. (2023), digital media provides a critical lifeline for individuals with disabilities, especially in underserved regions like Lafia. This study explores how digital media is being utilized to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities in Lafia, focusing on the opportunities and challenges digital platforms present for PWDs.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although digital media has the potential to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities, there remains limited research on how these platforms are being used in Lafia to meet the unique needs of PWDs. Despite the availability of assistive technologies and digital resources, many PWDs still face challenges in accessing these services due to infrastructure, literacy, and technological barriers. This study aims to explore how digital media can enhance accessibility for PWDs in Lafia and assess the challenges and opportunities that arise in the use of these platforms.

The findings will provide useful recommendations for policymakers, NGOs, and advocacy groups seeking to leverage digital platforms to improve the lives of PWDs in Nasarawa State.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses exclusively on Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, examining the role of digital media in enhancing accessibility for PWDs. The study does not extend to other regions or broader national efforts in digital accessibility.
